Splitting the posting into two is intentional. For me, there are two distinct parts. The first part is all the prep, although it could be seen as mulitple little steps, I'm sure. When the folios are constructed or designed I'm sure that would become the focus. But for me, for now, this is all preperation for the binding. Yesterday I talked about that preperation for this very thrown together simple book. But I could draw it out and focus on each little bit. I won't.
Now I get to go on to the stitches.
This time I chose an orange thread. Yes. I have multiple colored linen threads. You should see the selection of quilting threads my mother left me when she died. I come from good stockpiling stock.
Because I hate chasing threads that I accidently pull out, I started by putting a slip knot on my tail bit to keep it secure. This can pull into the paper and rip it, though, so it's important not to pull it too tight.
I punched the pape with an awl, so sometimes I had a hard time finding the hole with my needle. The thin paper shifted and tore easier than a thicker paper would have. You can see above where I have scratched the paper on a previous hole as I was trying to get my needle through.
This is how the stiches begin to form. At first, it's difficult keeping the signatures in the right place, but some clips and finger juggling and lots of slow movements and patience keep it together.
After the first pass, it gets sturdier with each stitch.
My perspective changes.
My focus intensifies.
And then I realize it's done.
Sewing this takes me to a place with fewer words.
